I am Phillip Yoon, an M.A. student in mathematics at Hunter College, CUNY. My current research is in algebra and combinatorics, with interests in interactions among algebra, combinatorics, and topology.

“Characteristic Independence of Betti Numbers of Monomial Ideals in Five Variables.” Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 230 (2026), 108354.
We prove that the multigraded, graded, and total Betti numbers of every monomial ideal in five variables are independent of the characteristic of the base field.
Current Research
I am currently investigating related questions concerning characteristic dependence of Betti numbers in higher numbers of variables. I am also working with Be’eri Greenfeld on growth and ideal structure in associative and monomial algebras through combinatorics on words. More information is available on my Research page.

Background
I earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 2021 and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2024. I have taught mathematics at the college and K–12 levels; more information is available on my Teaching page.
Outside of academics, I like to spend my free time hiking, running, writing, playing board games, going to concerts, looking through eBay for clothes, hunting for the best ramen or pho restaurants, or modeling.
