About Me
I am Phillip Yoon, an M.A. student in mathematics at Hunter College, CUNY. My research interests are in commutative algebra, particularly homological and combinatorial aspects of free resolutions and related invariants; algebraic combinatorics; and noncommutative algebra. I am especially interested in interactions among algebra, combinatorics, topology, and computation.

“Characteristic Independence of Betti Numbers of Monomial Ideals in Five Variables.” Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 230 (2026), 108354.
We prove that the multigraded, graded, and total Betti numbers of every monomial ideal in five variables are independent of the characteristic of the base field.
Current Research
My main current project continues my work on characteristic dependence of Betti numbers of monomial ideals. I am studying characteristic-specific threshold questions through their connections with torsion in simplicial homology and Stanley–Reisner theory, with broader interests in how combinatorial and topological structure governs free resolutions and related homological invariants.
I am also working with Be’eri Greenfeld on growth and ideal structure in associative and monomial algebras through combinatorics on words. More information is available on my Research page.

Background
I earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 2021 and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2024. I have taught mathematics at the college and K–12 levels; more information is available on my Teaching page.
Outside of academics, I like to spend my free time hiking, running, writing, playing board games, going to concerts, looking through eBay for clothes, hunting for the best ramen or pho restaurants, or modeling.
